Delta Ticket Redesign
For my interaction design class, I had a 3-week project to redesign the Delta plane ticket.
Goals
When we first started looking up current plane tickets, we realized how badly designed they actually were. This artifact obviously needed to be redesigned for readability and usability purposes.
In the ticket above, anyone can see how there is no use of hierarchy, no use of spacing, extremely crowded, and how confusing it reads. Some of our biggest goals for this project were to improve the readability and find a way to logically arrange the information while making the ticket more pleasing to look at.
Research
what's important
purpose
users
how
We performed the research by asking questions to several adults that fly often. We asked them questions like what is the most important piece on the ticket for the passenger, what everything means on the ticket, and when they look at each item. We also consulted other official tickets to find out what information was the most important for the airlines.
We discovered that there are two users that this ticket is important for: the flyer and the airline. The flyer needs a small piece of paper that they can quickly look at to see all of their flightʼs information. The flyer looks at this mutliple times in the 12 hours before their flight, so it is crucial that it is usable. The airline needs a paper that can quickly and easily check the flyer through all security and onto the plane.
These current tickets really do not meet that purpose for either user because of the poor design qualities. There are many aspect that are not necessary, there is no natural flow, and not an appropriate style for its purpose. The ticket does not have to be pretty, however, correctly utilizing color and layout could easily transform the ticket for the better.
After our analysis, we discovered what is actually important for a ticket: readability, usability, and organization. What needs to be the biggest is definitely the flight number and boarding time because that is what the flyer looks for the most. Organizing the information in a clear and concise way will increase the other two aspects.
Creation
After all of the hours looking at ideas and research, we started to develop some loose drafts. My partner stuck to only sketches, while I incorporated some digital drafts along with my sketches. We worked together for almost every redesign session and critiqued each other through the way. My design process usually consists of creating digitally while sketching certain aspects to see how they look in the bigger picture. When we put what we thought was the most important biggest we did not really concern ourselves with the other info as long as it was not too crowded. We also enlarged information that is looked at often by the flyer, such as the gate and seat numbers, to work towards our goals.
First Iteration
After the first class critique, a lot of the input revolved around having new iterations being more visually appleasing. When we saw that other groups had lots of color and shapes, we realized we needed to be way more creative. We also needed more motion in the design and thought we could incorperate this with arrows showing the flyer in what order to read the ticket. We added in lots of lines, arrows, and boxes to seperate information in a creative way.
